in Italy there is not such a rigid ranking as in the UK; I went to Rome, the largest of all, and with a very good reputation for physics. I must say that exams were much harder than the exams I am giving to my students at UCL now

      Rome undergrad, PhD in Oxford.
Both decent universities, but remember that in science the details of the course is far more important than the ‘prestige’ of the University, and names really don’t mean that much.

I went to Royal Holloway which is a pretty good university, if a little small. It’s really good for physics.

I went to Edinburgh University for my undergraduate degree, and I’m doing my PhD there too. What you do, and how well you do, once you get to university is much more important than which university you go to. Still, some universities are supposedly better at teaching some courses than other universities, and if you’re taught better you have a better chance of doing well. At University though you really do have to teach yourself, so at the end of the day how well you do is up to you. If you’re thinking of going to University, if I were you I’d choose whichever university is highly regarded for whatever it is you’re interested in. If a university is highly regarded in a subject, then it means they know it well and so will be better able to explain it and teach it to you.
