just imagine someone asking the same question to the developers of quantum mechanics in the beginning of the XXth century. They were studying very small objects, like electrons and protons, something apparently very different from everyday life; on the other hand, if we now have miniaturised electronics, it is only thanks to their work

It’s very hard to say exactly what the benefits will be. But we know that understanding more about our universe always leads to new technology and better lives for mankind.
When people were first studying electricity they couldn’t imagine all of the things that we use it for now, but they knew it was important to keep trying to understand the universe. You would never invent the electric light, by doing lots of research into candles!

The cameras used in the telescope I use are being developed as alternatives to xrays and MRI machines. The cryogenic systems are being used in industry. Microchips are in your digital cameras.

From the science we discover will help improve our understanding of the universe. I think if we understand the universe better it helps us grow as a species.
