      there is almost for sure water in some form, but no sign of life has been observed yet

      Possibly; if there is life it has successfully eluded us for now, and is probably hidden below the crust, probably where there is water.

      Nope. What they thought was bacteria from Martian rocks just turned out to be something from the method they used to examine them.
