No not really, but we’re not poor either. The really really good scientists (The ones who win Nobel prizes and stuff) probably do get paid a lot. The rest of us get paid normal amounts similar to a lot of other jobs. I think a typical income for a university lecturer is about £45000 a year, but I could be wrong about that. Since I’m still starting out being a scientist (I’m only in my 2nd year) I get paid less.

Are you joking?? not even the very top scientists get paid like a third-rank banker! and no, the starting salary of a lecturer is even less than 45000. Probably the ratio between the amount of effort you need to put to get there and the money you receive is among the worst you can think in the job market.

No we’re not rich, although we do get paid enough to live comfortably. There are lots of plus sides to being a scientist though (as well as getting paid to do something you love) I get to choose my hours – I can work when ever and where ever I like – and I get to travel all over the world!

I earn enough to keep a nice flat, a car and have fun when I won’t to. The higher up you go though the more money you earn and if you go into industry (working for companies that build things) rather than pure science research you can earn a lot more.
