      Because of gravity. It’s actually one of the definitions of what makes a planet: it has to be big enough that gravity makes it round. Gravity will always try and pull clumps of stuff into a sphere. The Earth is a very big clump of stuff.

      Because gravity pulls everything towards everything else, this means that if you start out with a cloud of dust eventually gravity will pull everything together into roughly a ball shape. This is how planets are formed!
