Its the ethanol molecule (the actual alcohol) that does the job. This is a small molecule soluble in water, and when you drink it in an alcoholic beverage, it goes into your blood stream and from there eventually gets in to your brain, where it effects the entire nervous system.
Ethanol is removed from the body through the liver, where it is transformed into acetaldehyde (and then to many other things) which is highly toxic and has an adverse effect on the body.

It contains molecules that interfer with how your brain works. The ethanol in alcohol stops you brain from working properly and that’s why, for example, you have poor coordination when you’re drunk.
Your body recognises acohol as being bad for it and tries to get rid of it, this can make you sick if you drink too much.

There are two alcohol chemicals in most drinks. Ethanol and methanol. Ethanol is what makes a person feel giddy. Both are actually poisonous, but methanol is much worse. Most alcohol manufacture removes a lot of it. Someone feels sick as the body tries to get rid of it. The reason people get hangovers is because alcohol dehydrates them and methanol is really hard to process. It takes a lot of effort for a body to get rid of it.

ethanol modifies the potential drop of connections between neurons, therefore our brain does not work any more as normal. When the changes are small, other connections can take over, and our behaviour is only slightly modified, but when changes are large, the brain almost stops working
